Goals:
Reading is one of the most important forms of human communication in modern culture and an essential activity in everyday life. Fluent reading ability is based on the rapid and efficient recognition of visual words. Studies showed that skilled readers are able to read 250 words per minute. Because of this, the neural mechanisms of rapid visual word recognition have become an important focus in neuroscientific studies of reading.
The main goals of this research program are:
– Familiar with the basic theory of visual word reading
– Familiar with cognitive neuroscience research field
– Have a general sense of how to come up with an experiment design from
literature
– Get hands on experience of collecting ERP (event-related potential) data.
– Get a general idea of analyzing data using Matlab
– Write an essay at the end of this program
Hopefully, this one-month program can help students get some hands on experience of neuroscience experiment, know the main work of doing research, and have a sense of whether they are really interested or not in doing research.
